While Winston’s struggle against Big Brother began with an external piece of evidence, it indeed with defeat of his internal motivation. Evidence against Big Brother and the Party had always existed, but Winston was convinced to deny his own instincts of truth, sanity, and his grasp on reality. In the end, Big Brother was able to defeat Winston in every way, to the point that Winston came to love Him.
