In other words, we might have to trade off material goods and services for cleaner air and water. Increased unemployment might on occasion be the price necessary to reduce rampant inflation. Unfortunately, we can rarely solve all problems in one swoop. We must be prepared to make trade-offs between objectives by looking at what we lose when we take each course of action.
