As I began to read “Cane,” I quickly realized this was going to be a difficult read. I kept thinking about the title because it brought back memories of my grandfather’s story of the origin of the black man. I close this paper by regretfully acknowledging that although written over seventy-seven years ago, Toomer's work still relates well to the problems and concerns of race in America today. I’m not saying we haven’t come a long way since the days of lynching, but we still have a long way to go to be as colorblind as my three-year-old daughter Brianna.
