In the first reading of As I Lay Dying, the characters seem to be temporarily lonely and separated from their loved ones. However, upon reading the novel a second time, I realized that their isolation from each other is permanent and their loneliness is more like a disease. …showed last 75 words of 839 total…only wishes to evoke emotion from the reader, but attempts to simulate the characters’ state of inner comatose for the reader’s understanding. The characters in As I Lay Dying are confusing because of the way they are portrayed as well as the concept which they are meant to represent. These two separate aspects of the novel prevent a separate understanding, yet when paired together, they build upon one another toward the reader’s enlightenment.
