In the first reading of As I Lay Dying, the characters seem to be temporarily lonely and separated from their loved ones. However, upon reading the novel a second time, I realized that their isolation from each other is permanent and their loneliness is more like a disease. only wishes to evoke emotion from the reader, but attempts to simulate the characters’ state of inner comatose for the reader’s understanding. The characters in As I Lay Dying are confusing because of the way they are portrayed as well as the concept which they are meant to represent. These two separate aspects of the novel prevent a separate understanding, yet when paired together, they build upon one another toward the reader’s enlightenment.
