I awake each day in my middle-class white suburban home and look around the world with a detached attitude. Sethe’s emancipation of Beloved still seems irrational, and Paul D’s loss of hope, despite his predicament, doesn’t seem completely reasonable. So I am left, snug in my bed, looking out the window at my neighborhood, holding a book written with a lifetime’s worth of struggle, of pain, and of love, and I am left untouched, unmoved, and just remember to set my alarm clock before I fall into a peaceful slumber.
