Jan's character is not perfect, but this makes her convincing. Jan was not a clichéd, spoiled brat, but rather an interesting, real character, that completes the story. She plays an important part and turns out to be a rather influential character. The reader often dislikes the snobbish Jan, but the notion that a character has an effect on an audience is the mark of a strong, well built character.
