from the fact that it is a best seller and a classic, it is a good (but long) story about an epic adventure that would, in someway, change the life of everyone who read it. One of the techniques of writing, and probably the most important one, that makes this story good is description. This book has so mush imagery that no one should have trouble picturing the settings, characters, and even the battle scenes.
