The Preservation of Innocence
Catcher in the Rye is one of the most interesting books that I’ve read this year. Although Holden’s
language is very vulgar, it makes the book more real and interesting. I didn’t see it when first reading
the book but Salinger uses his characters as symbols or his characters have a function as to what he
feels. The three major characters that he mentions the most are Allie,

he explains how he feels towards Allie, Phoebe, and Jane. But they also
represent more then just people that he cares about, they represent the innocence that Holden wants to
preserve in each of them. That’s why he wants to be the catcher in the rye. Although his dreams are
realized impossible at the end of the book, he still his happy to be there sharing his time with the
people that he loves.
