This technique charecterization in counterpoint was revolutionary at the time. Conrad made the technique so successful however because of his descriptions and placements of characters. His technique is still emulated today to express similar themes. The most recent example is the novel and movie Fight Club. None reveal the true nature of man, but all reveal an aspect of its duality.
