David Hume
David Hume was one of the greatest thinkers in Western History. He was an 18th
century philosopher who looked at the world in logical terms. He was a realist who, through
philosophy, sought to distinguish between the impression of human experience and the ideas,
which are changing representations of life experiences. He was also the ultimate sceptic, who
did not accept that which presented itself as knowledge until it was proven to be so.

David Hume’s ideas had great effects on today’s society in many ways. He was
a great economist, a historian, a sociologist and a philosopher. Hume is both epistemological
and metaphysical subjectivist and a moral and ethical relativist. His theories make both
philosophical knowledge and scientific knowledge impossible. His philosophy has a very
modern sound: a collection of impressions collected nowhere; contents of mind which is not a
container.
