He is afraid of death and therefore attempts to domesticate it as much as possible by considering every aspect of it. Donne preaches the end of death and says that there will be no need for him anymore. The total effect on the reader is dramatic and emotional, and reassures us that death is nothing to be feared, only conquering us if we let it.
