Devil's Island
Devil’s Island is a small inlet eight miles off of the French Guianan Coast. This settlement was apart of the French penal colony that was used from 1852-1946. Devil’s Island is apart of the Iles du Salute, which also consist of the Royale Islands and Saint-Joseph’s Island. These islands were formerly known as Iles du Diable.

how its name came to be. Another factor was the climate. Devil’s Island had only one way in and out, and that was by sea. No one had escaped from this island until Papillon did by making a raft out of coconuts.
During the filming of his life Cherriere returned to the island and “feared for his freedom” because the settings seemed so real. Henri Cherriere later died at the age of sixty-six in 1973.
