Harold Washington was Chicago’s first black mayor. He was elected in 1983, in an election that garnered national attention. Washington, who was sixty-five, collapsed at his desk during a meeting with his press secretary, and within minutes of his collapse paramedics were urgently attempting to revive him (Chicago Mourns The Loss of Mayor Washington). He had lost consciousness and suffered what was later described as a massive heart attack. Washington never regained consciousness, and died just seven months into his second term.
