Contained in the first chapter of the Scarlet Letter, the Prison-Door, there is a significant amount of symbolism. The rose bush and Hester both have a very strong root to the land in which they have grown, and because of this refuse to deviate from where they have become comfortable. Regardless of how the rose bush was able to survive “out of the stern old wilderness” and Hester was able to survive in the emotional wilderness of Salem, they did just that.
