Literary evidence, most notably the description of the Bodhi-tree of Amitayus, Tathagata in the Maha Sukhavati-vyuha demonstrates that the tree depicted at Sanci is of Buddhist import, yet not of Buddhist origin. Rather, it points to an already existing Mahayanist tradition which are “a prolongation of Vedic tradition (11).”
