THE RESEARCH PAPER
Ellison’s Juneteenth is a layered and subtly allusive book. It depends
heavily on a stream of consciousness style, and it asks for a greater demand
on the reader who seeks to learn about it and grasp it’s whole. The settings
and landscapes of the book are almost entirely psychological and dialogical,
and easy to get lost in. Juneteenth’s formal derangement’s reflect a grown

so, like Bliss we fail to
complete ourselves. We cannot develop a solid integrity. We work at cross
purposes with other people and within our own hearts. We may even destroy
ourselves. Ellison’s ambiguity about whether Bliss is white or black in my
opinion is deliberate. All Americans are both black and white regardless of
skin color. We can never achieve the wholeness that might be ours if we
could sustain our original attachment.
