and began firing into the crowd killing four students and wounding nine. There was never an order to fire.
Some of the National Guardsmen claimed that they had heard the order to fire while others claimed no such thing. Some claimed that they were fired at first by a sniper, which would give them the right to fire back in order to protect themselves. Not one of the Guardsmen however was struck by a bullet.
