William Faulkner said “The only thing worth writing about is the human heart in conflict with itself.” I agree with this statement because self conflict is the most difficult type of conflict to resolve; one has to be his/her own mediator while fighting two battles at the same time. Mary Tyrone is one of the most troubled characters in all of literature with many conflicts between her, her family and many different aspects of herself. Her heart has to deal with not only the morphine she injects into herself, but the heartbreak of knowing that she could have had such a better life had she made a few different decisions; but she didn’t and never blames herself for them.
