In comparing the novel of Mary Reilly to the motion picture I noticed a few differences in the two such as the slightly changed narrative. In the first scene of the novel, to begin with, we are introduced immediately to Mary’s childhood horror from her point of view. time available in a motion picture, the images of places and the general impact of scenes must be a little more forceful in order to leave an impression on the viewer. In my opinion, from what I saw of the movie, I think the director did a fairly decent job of keeping the movie quite analogous to the book by not going too far off the narrative of the actual novel many movies often do.
