I believe that this work of Michelangelo's is considered a Masterwork because of it's realistic and careful attention to the detail of the human form and because of it's symbolism. Michelangelo began work on the colossal figure of David in 1501, and by 1504 the sculpture was in place outside the Palazzo Vecchio. Michelangelo was 29 when he completed David. In the 19th century the statue was moved to the Accademia.
