On April 4, 1949, sixteen countries signed the Treaty of Washington and formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States.
