that there are many lessons we have to learn in life. Defoe lets us know this through his main character Moll Flanders who is portrayed as him in the novel. He describes her as a child born in Newgate Prison who was twelve year a whore, five times a wife, twelve years a thief, eight year a transported felon in Virginia, at last grew rich, lived, honest, and dies a penitent. Much like Defoe himself.
