He will suffer sharp pains; the glare will distress him, and he will be unable to see the realities of which in his former state he had seen the shadows.” The man suffering from sharp pains and the brightness of the light is symbolic of a person using their freedom. When a person uses their freedom, they experience isolation and uncertainty. Two burdens that are similar to what you describe as anguish and forlornness.
