In Charlotte Brontë's novel Jane Eyre, Jane’s sense of reasoning overrides her passion in her decision making. Jane fights to remain as she is instead of conforming to Mr. Rochester’s standards, and she resists St. John Rivers’ attempt to transform her into a missionary machine.

Jane is successful throughout the novel in fighting off both Rochester and St. John’s attempts to turn her into something she is not. She used her reasoning to escape each situation instead of relying on her passion, which may have caused her to give in and conform to what they wanted. Jane also realizes that by using her reasoning instead of her passion she saved herself and others much unnecessary grief.
