The Road to Wigan Pier is one of George Orwell¹s lesser known books. It was created not as a novel but as a book to inform people of the harsh conditions of an industrial society. Orwell was sent by a socialist book club to investigate unemployment in northern England. He managed to not only do this but also to report on many other aspects of industrialism, including socialism, poverty, and poor living conditions.

I found this book to be very interesting. Orwell intrigued me in the beginning by giving a detailed description of coal mines and lodging houses. I found the second part of the book very interesting because much of the information about industrial England was new to me. I found that Orwell was often repetitive. Because of this, he got his points across. Even though Orwell was often repetitive, he still managed to keep my interest.
