During the 1800’s the social structures of accumulation changed drastically. In general the earliest catalyst to economic growth came from foreign trade, which increased from 1793 to 1840. The contradictions that arose in the components of the social structure of accumulation, was that of “integration.” There were two types of integration, vertical and horizontal. Vertical integration meant a combining of independent companies or functions at various stages of production from raw materials all the way up to the consumer. Horizontal integration meant combining similar businesses at the same stage of production or distribution.
