The Elizabethans, somewhat expecting this bloodshed would not have been happy if it ended any other way since it was part of the whole revenge tragedy construct. Hamlet has fulfilled what he had set out to do; he has avenged his father’s death, and in the end therefore died nobly. Anything else is just a detail. For the modern audiences, the view of the final scene is purely tragic.
