The Crucible
The Crucible was a play written in 1953 by Arthur Miller. His play depicted the time of the Salem witch-hunts in which many innocent people were killed under the charge of heresy. Many of the puritans believed that these innocent people were in fact guilty of witchcraft and believed they should be condemned to die as witches. As the judge in the crucible says “there are no witnesses in witchcraft only the accused and the victim.” So the only evidence the court had to decide a verdict was the testimony of the victim. Many of the “so called victims” lied about the accused because they wanted land or they basically disliked the other for some odd reason.
The church played a large roll in the Salem witch trials.
