In the beginning it is very clear he falls asleep reading a book, then is awaken by a knocking on his door. Line 3 has alliteration, repeating the ‘n’ sound. Then things are somewhat gothic and dark. He begins to miss his wife Lenore, thinking of her being in heaven with angels. His purple curtains can show richness and death. And with the visitor at his door, may seem to him as death is coming to

the actual name of his wife? At the end Poe is telling the bird to leave him alone. The raven doesn’t move. At the very end, Poe lies floating on the floor never to recover from this Raven, this visit from the Devil.
I loved this poem, among many from Mr. Poe. He has a talent to see into the dark side of life and nature. As I say, “Madness, turns our minds inward.”
