The Scarlet Ibis
Pride, one of the 7 deadly sins, can overcome peoples lives and thoughts.
This is what has happened in the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, written by
James Hurst tells a story of a young boy who’s pride has overcome him, and
eventually hurts someone very close to him. The story, set in the northern
North Carolina coastline consists of a Doodle, his mother and father, and his
older brother. Doodle, born paralyzed has somehow

kill his younger brother, which in turn affects his family, friends, himself, and
of course, Doodle. It affected everybody that is close to him, because he has
been killed, and will no longer be around to be loved by anybody, but will
only be able to be loved by his spirits. Pride, probably one of the most
horrible things on earth, can only come to hurt yourself, or someone close to
you.
