The world is not really round, but flat. At least that is what the Anglo-Saxons in the era in which Beowulf is written believe. Forsaken ideology continues with the belief in their indomitable heroes. The unknown author of Beowulf relates this message by foiling the characters Beowulf and Unferth using devices in addition to exploiting the plot.

Even if the world is flat to the Anglo-Saxons, their moral lessons and literature still apply today. Their use of symbolism, anastrophy, and the kenning exhibit qualities people aspire to. Additionally, with just a small bit of competitive edge, as with Beowulf and Unferth, people are challenged to exceed normal boundaries soaring to unprecedented heights.
