As I read over the short story “Two Kinds”, I see a piece that is rich in conflict and drama. Ni Kan was a child raised in America by her mother who had lost everything in China but looked for hope in America. With her mothers strong attitude towards success it created overwhelming amount of pressure for Ni Kan. The concept of freedom in America really went to her mothers head screaming to

her to make decisions for herself without questioning. One day, on Kan’s thirtieth birthday her mother offered her a very sentimental gift. After the piano was abandoned for years upon years, she passed it on to Ni Kan to show that there are no longer any hard feelings about that event that happened so long ago. Just like that the burden was released and their tension was no longer existent, the conflict was resolved.
