This is a very close issue. The question of whether the first British settlers were free and intelligent is a highly debatable one. I think that they just were greedy and really rushed into something unprepared, which is why so many died those first winters, and had they prepared then they might have been enlightened. That is how I feel on whether the first British settlers are enlightened or not.
