Chamberlain finally realised that Hitler was up to no good and surprised Hitler by engaging him with war. In conclusion, war was inevitable but was delayed by Chamberlain's naivety, and so happened in September 1939, despite Hitler smashing the treaty of Versailles over 4 years previously.
