John Dalton was born on September 6, 1766, in Eaglesfeild, Cumberland County, England. John’s father was a weaver and a school teacher. John was taught by his father at a Quaker school in his home town. John began teaching at the Quaker school at the age of 12. In 1781 he moved to Kendal, where he had a school with his older brother and cousin. In 1787 Dalton began a series of meteorological observations. By studying this Dalton discovered the law of partial pressures of mixed gases, also know as Dalton’s law. This law states that the total pressure exerted by a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the separate pressures that each of the gases would exert if it alone occupied the whole volume.
