This is because "Private Lives" is spread over a very intense couple of days, therefore it is probable that they won't meet anyone else in that time, and so the story is focused on only four main characters, plus a maid, whereas "The Importance of being Ernest" is spread over several weeks, therefore a broader range of characters is needed.
